Simon & Garfunkel: True Hippie Music

Hello hippie chicks, and dudes, out there! Once, again, thank you for reading, and welcome back if this isn’t your first time here! Today, we are going to be talking about one of the most notorious “hippie” bands in the world; Simon & Garfunkel!

Simon & Garfunkel are a duet consisting of singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Art Garfunkel who wrote deeply-worded songs, many regarding the war and other news of the times. These two became a signal of revolution, love, and peace, throughout the 60’s with their popular tunes like “The Sound of Silence” and “Mrs. Robinson” and created quite a name for themselves among the young, anti-establishment, people throughout the world, specifically the U.S. and England.

The two met as children in 1953 in Queens, New York and wrote their first song together, “The Girl For Me,” in 1956 while attending high school together at Forest Hills High School. The duet received their first contract at age 15 under the names Tom & Jerry and released “Hey School Girl” which eventually went on to sell over 100,000 copies and became number 49 on the Billboard’s top 100!

In the early 60’s, Simon & Garfunkel made the transition from rock and roll over to folk rock, which had much better reception with the public. Around 1966, “The Sound of Silence,” originally written between 1963 and 1964, hit the top 100 launching Simon and Garfunkel into the top of their fame. This song brought them back up to the attention of the world where they earned their fame as one of the most notorious folk-rock bands of the 1960’s. I mean, you can’t think of the hippies without hearing Simon & Garfunkel in the background.

Simon & Garfunkel had many top-charting songs but despite their fame they did have a somewhat rocky music relationship and broke up many times to go their separate ways. Each went on to do their own solo work in the late 70’s back had gotten back together in the early 80’s and threw a free concert in Central Park in New York on September 19, 1981. This concert brought attention back to the duo once more and they re-launched their band and planned a tour for the next May, however, the two were unable to reconcile their differences and ended up not speaking for most of the tour. Since that time, Simon & Garfunkel have been on and off as a duet and have played a few shows since their falling out. The duet has now not performed together again since 2010.

Overall, the music of this great Folk duo inspires and relaxes the soul with the intricate melodies and highly figurative lyrics. If you want to be transported back into the mind of a hippie, just turn on some Simon & Garfunkel, light up some incense, (maybe pop a tab or two), and chill out. I guarantee if you like music in general, you will like Simon & Garfunkel, perhaps the most famous Hippie band to ever live.

Thanks all for reading, I hope you have learned a little interesting tidbit about one of my favorite duos, and I hope to have inspired you to go check out their music too!

Peace and Love,
