Antioxidants; Let’s Eat ‘Em!

Welcome back hippies, today is Tasty Tuesday! I want to focus on one ingredient or item to be in all the recipes and want to do one day’s worth of meals, so, for today we are going to focus on Antioxidants!

In summary, antioxidants hunt out free radicals in the body which are produced as a byproduct of the body’s metabolic process to create energy. These free radicals can do harm to the body when not counteracted by antioxidants. The body naturally produces some antioxidants and seeks them out in our foods and these can help to limit and even repair problems created by oxidants and free radicals! If we increase our intake of anti-oxidants we can help to repair these damages such as: arthritis, asthma, Alzheimer’s, depression, cancer, diabetes, etc. Antioxidants aren’t a “repair all” and if you eat loads of berries every day that won’t guarantee you to not get cancer someday but increasing antioxidant intake can help to fight off some of these problems. Some foods that are high in antioxidants are berries, dark green veggies, dark colored grapes, nuts, and orange veggies like carrots and sweet potatoes. Now, let’s go through a day’s worth of recipes to try to increase antioxidant intake with healthy, delicious foods!

Breakfast:

Sweet Potato and Spinach Omelet!

Ingredients:

tumblr_inline_n0jpi7k7gb1qgeygd.jpg

  • 2-4 egg whites
  • 1/3-1/2 cup diced sweet potatoes
  • Handful of baby spinach
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • Shredded cheese of your choice
  • Toppings like salsa, or hot sauce if desired!
  • Oil or cooking spray

Directions:

  • Pre-cook the sweet potatoes, diced, over med. Heat until done, these will just be thrown into the omelet after so they need to be mostly cooked.
  • When the potatoes are almost done, add some garlic and the spinach, allow that to cook until spinach is wilted and sautéed.
  • Pour your egg whites into a pan and allow them to cook most of the way.
  • When the eggs are cooked most of the way but are still pliable, add the spinach and sweet potato mixture to one half of the eggs. Add some cheddar or mozzarella cheese if desired!
  • Flip the other half of the eggs over top, allow both sides to brown and allow the middle to cook thoroughly.
  • Enjoy with some salsa, hot sauce, or avocado on top!

Lunch:

Spinach and Berry Saladsalad.jpg

Ingredients: (these are less measured and mostly just put as much as you would like.)

  • Baby spinach and salad greens (darker the better)
  • Chopped celery
  • Chopped pear
  • Walnuts
  • Berries of your choice
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Avocado
  • Goat cheese
  • Dressing: really you could put whatever you like but I would recommend a balsamic vinaigrette, maybe a sweet one.

Directions:

  • Basically, your normal salad making procedure here but rinse the greens and chop the celery and pears.
  • Add all of it to a bowl. Mostly spinach and greens then add the toppings to taste.
  • Enjoy with some dressing or without!

Dinner:

Sweet Potato, Kale, and Shrimp Skilletsweet-potato-kale-and-shrimp-skillet-2

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • ½ cup diced onion
  • Red pepper flakes
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 cups diced sweet potatoes
  • 2 cups fresh shrimp
  • 3 cups trimmed and coarsely chopped kale
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  • In a cast iron skillet: add olive oil over med. Heat.
  • Add onion and red pepper flakes, cook until onions are translucent.
  • Add garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds.
  • Add sweet potato and cook until soft, you may need to add a few tablespoons of water to help steam the potatoes.
  • Add the shrimp and cook until pink.
  • Turn the heat down to low and add the kale, being sure to stir and cook until soft and wilted.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.

Snack/Desert:

This is kind of a breakfast/snack/desert, but I’m going to use this as today’s desert:

Very Berry Fro-Yo cups!FroYo-Berry-Bites.jpg

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup finely crushed or chopped almonds
  • ¼ cup granola
  • 2-4 tbs melted coconut oil
  • 2 tbs sugar or sugar substitute (optional, just helps add sweetness and cut the sour of the berries and yogurt)
  • ¾ cup – 1 ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 – 4 tbs of honey
  • 1 ½ cups+ Berries of your choice
  • A muffin tin and liners

Direction:

  • Line each muffin tin with a non-stick liner
  • In a bowl, combine crushed almonds, granola, sugar, and coconut oil. This should be a malleable mixture that mostly stays together when you press it into the cups. Think graham cracker pie crust.
  • Add the honey to the yogurt and add to the cups on top of the crust.
  • Add the berries to the top. This can be blue berries, acai, raspberries, strawberries, black berries, etc.
  • Freeze until firm for about 6 hours. They should stay set after that to be left at room temp or in the fridge!
  • Enjoy!

Well, I certainly hope you have enjoyed this week’s tasty Tuesday and I am looking forward to hearing about how you liked these recipes! Make sure to leave a like and a comment and let me know what you would like to see next! See you tomorrow for Women’s Wednesdays!

  2. Beach clean up! – This could totally be paired with #1 but go to the beach and try to clean up trash together! Those sand sifters only do so much! Keep our beaches clean and enjoy time together making a positive impact! You could also do this on hiking trails, parks, and other places with high amounts of trash!
  3. Stargazing! – What a better way to enjoy a night than to go be dazzled by the millions of stars in the galaxy! Find a nice spot somewhere and gaze at those crazy balls of energy and gas! Just make sure you pick up all your trash!

  7. Ice skating! – Ice skating has no environmental impact as far as I’m aware and can be a great, full-of-laughter, time to spend with your partner! Angela, my partner, and I have yet to go, but I know it will be fun! Similar to this is the roller rink, which is super fun, and gets you great exercise at the same time!
  8. Go hiking! – Go check out your local scenery on a walk or hike! Make sure you try not to disturb the natural habitats of the animals around the trail, however, and pick up trash on your way! Such a fun way to spend a day, especially if there is a wonderful lookout point at the end!
  9. Check out your local Farmer’s Market! – Farmers markets are a great way to support local businesses in your area. Check out the farms and vendors there and see which are the most low-impact on the environment!
  10. Go to a poetry reading! – You can find book and poetry readings at most libraries and book stores. They are a wonderful way to spend a quiet evening together enjoying local artists’ work!
  11. Check out a local open mic! – You don’t have to be a musician to enjoy an open mic! Go check out and support your local artists! These are usually held at bars or coffee shops!
  12. Go fruit picking at an organic farm! – See if there are any organic farms near you that have fruit picking! They taste delicious, you can make tons of awesome fruit desserts and snacks together with all the fantastic and organic produce you’ve picked together and support local, organic farms together!
  13. Watch the sunrise/sunset together! – The sunrise and sunsets are so gorgeous when you make time to go see them! Pack up a little basket of snacks and find a lookout point to enjoy it! Coffee and muffins or tea and biscuits make for a great sunrise breakfast! I suppose you could have tea or coffee with some dessert to see the sunset!
  14. Do a craft together! – Crafts are so much fun to do together, especially when paired with a few drinks! Enjoy being creative together and let your creative side go wild!
  15. Plant a little herb garden together! – Planting herbs is a great, relaxing way to get a taste of nature and let your creative side flow! There is nothing like home-grown, fresh, herbs to add that extra kick to your meals!

Well, I hope you liked these ideas and try them out! Make sure you come back and tell me what you think! Angela and I totally enjoy these dates together all the time and I know you will too!

What’s The Deal With Hair Masks?

HELLO ALL MY HIPPIE CHICKS OUT THERE!

Today is Women’s Wednesday and I will be talking about women’s health, fashion, style, and all else pertaining to women on Wednesdays! Feel free to go over to my contact section and send me any questions you have and I’ll do my best to answer them! Especially, LGBT pertaining questions, since I am a member of the cool-ass LGBT club myself!

Okay, let’s talk about hair treatments you can do at home to add shine, health, and strength to your hair! Hair masks are basically a treatment you make at home, or buy from a store, that you leave in your hair to help add vitamins and oils to the hair in order to repair damage and strengthen your hair whilst adding shine and luster to it as well. Remember that these hair masks aren’t going to repair your split ends, you’ll need a haircut for that, but they can help to moisturize, strengthen, and add shine to your hair, and just maintain its healthiness. There are a few different organic and natural hair masks and leave-in conditioning treatments you can make from home so here we have a list of them, what they do, and how to make them! Enjoy!

  1. Avocado Hair Mask
    • What it does: This mask introduces oils and vitamins that occur naturally in the ingredients to add shine to the hair and help it to be silky and smooth.
    • What you’ll need:
      • An over-ripe Avocado or two depending on how much hair you have
      • ¼ – 1/2 cup of olive oil
      • 1 tbs. lemon juice.
    • What to do:
      • First: mix all the ingredients in a bowl and combine well, make sure the avocado is well-mashed and blended with the other ingredients. It’s going to be nasty, but worth it!
      • Now apply the mixture to damp hair (I mean, I’m sure it will look just fine in dry hair too.) really focus on the ends of the hair and not so much on the roots.
      • Be careful not to leave in too long as lemon juice is, actually, a natural way to lighten your hair color (we will talk more about that later), don’t come out looking like that one time Justin Beiber bleached his hair and looked totally homoerotic…
      • Leave the mixture in your hair for about 20 minutes.
      • After about 20-30 minutes rinse this nasty shit off in the shower, shampoo like normal and it should be all shiny and great! Even better, use a wide-toothed comb in the shower to comb through while you still have the avocado shit in your hair and it will be EXTRA awesome!
  1. Egg Treatment
    • What it does: Eggs help to prevent hair loss and can even help your hair grow more! (some say, I’ve yet to see proof..) however, eggs are totally high in fat and fat is great for your hair! Proteins in eggs also help to strengthen your hair!
    • What you’ll need:
      • A few egg yolks
      • Some olive oil
    • What to do:
      • You’ll want to separate the egg yolks away from the white, save the whites to make an awesome facial mask if you want!
      • Add about a tablespoon of oil for every yolk.
      • Just as before, starting with the top of your head, work the mixture into your hair, really concentrating on the ends of the hair.
      • Place a shower cap on or tie your hair up and leave the mixture in for about 30 minutes.
      • Shampoo and condition your hair as normal and you should have nice silky smooth hair!
  1. Coconut oil and Honey Treatment
    • What it does: Coconut Oil is a great deep conditioner and can even be used in small amounts as a hair product to keep down fly-aways! Honey is great for your skin and hair! It has wonderful anti-bacterial properties and is great for healing!
    • What you’ll need:
      • 1 bottle of honey (give or take)
      • 6 tbs. of coconut oil (give or take)
    • What to do:
      • Heat the oil slightly to better combine with the honey
      • Add the honey to the oil and mix thoroughly
      • Add the mixture to dry hair and leave in for about 30 minutes.
      • Be careful not to leave in too long as honey can naturally lighten the hair.
      • Shampoo and condition as normal!

Hopefully you guys have enjoyed these three options for natural hair treatments! Let me know if you try them and what you think! Personally I have done the egg one in my EXTREMELY curly hair and did see changes to the split ends for sure. Thank you so much for reading!
